How are my people feeling today?
I challenge you to take a few minutes and do this exercise with me. Ask yourself this question and choose a one word feeling to describe how you are feeling.
Nervous?
Stressed?
Excited?
Joyful?
Angry?
Upset?
In Control?
Open?
Then ask yourself, why am I feeling this way?
Now, because we know that our thoughts create our feelings, what will come up for you is the reason you are feeling that way.
The thought that comes up will most likely be something your brain offers you without much supervision. Without intentionally deciding what to think. Bank on that happening. That’s what our brains do. They tend to go to the negative place first. That’s their job. They are looking for danger, trying to protect us & trying to keep us alive so they are constantly on the lookout for what could go wrong/what isn’t going right.
The amazing thing is, you can let your brain choose and you can keep that thought or you can choose something else. Your thoughts are YOUR choice. Always.
Let’s play it out:
How am I feeling right now?
Stressed.
Why?
Because my students come to school tomorrow and I am not ready.
Now, you’re feeling stressed not because the students are arriving tomorrow. That’s the current circumstance of your life. Circumstances don’t cause feelings. How do we know that? Because not everyone would feel stressed about the students arriving tomorrow.
It’s always the THOUGHT that comes up for us based on our current circumstance that causes how we feel.
In this instance it’s - I am not ready.
That may seem SO true to you. Like a fact that could be proven in a court of law. But I’m here to tell you that it’s not true. Being ready isn’t something that you can prove. Being ready is subjective and each person has a different definition for what ‘ready’ means.
Here’s your challenge:
What if the thought - “I’m not ready” - isn’t true?
What would it be like for you if you stopped thinking that?
Now, if what you are thinking feels great and you love it, carry on living your beautiful life. And if your current thought is causing you to feel in a way you'd rather not feel, then take a minute to question your current thought. Stop and answer these two questions.
What if what you are currently thinking isn’t true?
What would it be like for you if you stopped thinking that?
Then get in the driver's seat of your life and ask yourself: How do I want to be feeling right now?
Calm? Confident? Neutral? Accepting?
Let’s go with calm.
Then ask yourself: What would I need to be thinking in order to feel calm?
I can do tomorrow.
I am as ready as I am and it’s good enough. I’m enough.
I believe in myself and my ability to show up for myself and my students tomorrow.
Everything happens for me.
Try on some new thoughts and see if they create calm for you. Then go to work practising those instead of letting your brain dictate your experience.
Every single one of you beautiful souls is 100% capable of making this first day back, first week back, entire year, one that works for you. One that serves you. And one that feels the way you want it to feel.
And I’ve got your back the entire way.
I care about you. I am here for you and boy oh boy do I believe in you.
Have whatever kind of day you want to have tomorrow. That’s what is in your control.
Big love.
