Dinner & Friends & Anxiety

Plans are made with a friend to meet up for dinner and all is well in the world. And then, as the meeting approaches, anxiety sets in. 

I won’t have anything interesting to talk about. 

What if there are dead silences and it’s super awkward?

I’ll probably look stupid. 

I don’t even want to go anymore. 

I should just cancel so I don’t have to feel this way. 

Why can’t we just feel excited about seeing our friend? 

Why can’t we look forward to it and feel confident and enthusiastic about getting together? 

Man, it would just be so nice to be the kind of person who doesn’t feel anxious about meeting up with friends.


But it seems like this isn’t possible for us. 

It’s just the way we are. 


What if it was possible?

What would you say if I told you that these are simply thought patterns that have been practised for SO long that they just seem like the truth? Like it’s just the way it is.

And when we think these thoughts, we feel anxious and then dread the get together. 

And sometimes even cancel. Even though deep down we really want to go. 

What if you decided to believe me and started believing that they are simply thoughts. 

And not the truth. 

Thoughts are always that, thoughts. Sentences that our brain offers us to think. They don’t seem optional and definitely don’t seem like something we are choosing to think. But they are. And that’s great news because once we become familiar with what we are thinking and how it makes us feel and act, we get to decide what to think instead in order to experience our lives the way we want to. 

We can decide to be the person who feels anxious about meeting up with friends and then cancels. 

We can decide to be the person who feels anxious about meeting up with friends and allows the anxiety to be okay and goes to the dinner feeling anxious.

We can decide to be the person who doesn't want to feel anxious so decides to think new thoughts and ends up feeling excited about dinner. 

All of it is in our control. And that’s a beautiful thing.
